Yeah, those knuckleheads will become management. Folks, this is a good reason to work hard in your speech and software engineering classes (avoid ethics, however). Just becuase you are in management doesn't mean you won't be programming, it just means you will have better job security and more control over a code base (which may or may not be a good thing). My list of things I want to be good at: -Programming -Configuration Management -People Management -Money Management -Marketing -Proposal/Paper writing -Software Ethics (Liability, Contracts, personal and professional responcibility) -Constant Learning "Software Engineering" should cover three of those five. Programming is really something Cal Poly can only give you a start on. The others are developed through a combination of liberal arts classes and job experiance. I'm really trying to develop better ways of developing these skills. I think a lot of people underestimate liberal arts/bussiness classes. I hope I don't sound like too much of a pointy-haired man. -John From ctindel at gmail.com Mon Jun 20 09:22:44 2005 From: ctindel at gmail.com (Chad Tindel) Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2005 09:22:44 -0700 Subject: [CPLUG Chatter] Gartner projects tech job market to shrink by 30% In-Reply-To: <1119283036.17397@orion.he.net> References: <1119283036.17397@orion.he.net> Message-ID: > My list of things I want to be good at: > -Programming > -Configuration Management > -People Management > -Money Management > -Marketing > -Proposal/Paper writing > -Software Ethics (Liability, Contracts, personal and professional > responcibility) > -Constant Learning > > "Software Engineering" should cover three of those five. Just out of curiousity, why do you omit basic personal ethics but have specifically software ethics? I meant personal ethics to be part of personal responcibility. I don't mean to hide this important aspect from the list, but I wanted to emphasize contract law and liability law becuase it's really easy to screw up ethically if you don't understand the terms people in management throw around. Either way, I shouldn't have to list personal ethics specfically. That's part of any life. As a software engineer, however, I need to know more about the ethics surrounding the software I develop. That's a strange beast (not that personal ethics isn't). -John From ctindel at gmail.com Mon Jun 20 10:17:24 2005 From: ctindel at gmail.com (Chad Tindel) Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2005 11:17:24 -0600 Subject: [CPLUG Chatter] Gartner projects tech job market to shrink by 30% In-Reply-To: <1119285511.19528@orion.he.net> References: <1119285511.19528@orion.he.net> Message-ID: > > Just out of curiousity, why do you omit basic personal ethics but have > > specifically software ethics? > > I meant personal ethics to be part of personal responcibility. Gotcha. You specifically mentioned "avoid ethics" at the top, which must have just been a jab against management in general. I actually found the Ethics class offered by the Philosophy dept to be one of the most interesting non-CS courses that I took at Poly. I highly recommend it to anyone that has the chance, especially if Professor Abney is still teaching it.
